STORYLINE
People began gathering outside the magistrates court in Ventersdorp, South Africa, on Tuesday morning as the first day of trial of the two suspects accused of the murder of white supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche got underway.
A heavy police presence suggested concerns that racial tension may boil over, as Terreblanche''s supporters flocked down to the courthouse with flags and banners.
The trial was expected to start at 0900 local time (0700 GMT).
Terreblanche was bludgeoned to death by two of his farm workers on Saturday in an apparent dispute over unpaid wages, police said.
It was a brutal end for 69-year-old Terreblanche, a man once convicted of beating a farm worker so badly the man was left brain damaged.
A 15-year-old male and a 28-year-old male turned themselves into police for the killing and were due to appear in court on Tuesday.
The mother of the 15-year-old murder suspect told AP Television on Monday that her son struck Terreblanche with an iron rod after the farmer refused to pay him.
She said her son told her that he and his co-workers had not been paid since he started working for Terreblanche in December.
When they asked for their money, Terreblanche told them to first make sure that all his cattle had been brought in from pasture and counted. When they did that, Terreblanche still refused to pay them and had threatened them, the suspect''s mother said.
This undermines claims by Terreblanche''s supporters that the killing was inspired by an apartheid-era song urging people to kill white farmers.
Members of Terreblanche''s Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) movement, better known as the AWB, have blamed African National Congress Youth League leader Julius Malema, and his persistent singing of the song in question, which includes the words "kill the Boer," as South Africa''s white settlers, who originally came from the Netherlands, are called.
Boer means farmer in Afrikaans, the language of the descendants of the early Dutch settlers, or Afrikaners.
Malema led college students in the song last month, sparking a legal battle and last week the high court ruled the song hate speech and banned Malema from singing it.
The ANC is appealing, insisting that the song is a valuable part of its cultural heritage and that the lyrics are not intended literally and are therefore not hate speech.
Terreblanche''s killing has increased racial tensions in the country and added to safety fears less than 10 weeks ahead of the World Cup.
