Umang Tinting was originally a traditional lullaby sung by mothers to soothe their babies or toddlers to sleep. The child would be placed inside a sarong cradle, tied to a spring and rope hanging from a beam under the roof. The mother would then gently rock the cradle in rhythm with her lullaby to lull the child to sleep.

Inspired by the melody and rhythm of this song, the Orang Brunei community in the Bongawan district created the Umang Tinting dance. The dance follows a rhythmic pattern called "tinting", which refers to the beats and tempo played on the drum. Accompanied by a singer and the gambus—a traditional stringed instrument similar to the Arabian oud—Umang Tinting is performed at festivals, cultural events, and special occasions to bring joy and celebration.

The Umang Tinting dance in this video was performed at the Malaysia Dance Festival 2024 in Sabah, organised by JKKN Sabah (Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara, Negeri Sabah) and choreographed by Persatuan Kebudayaan Permata Tari Sabah.
