♻️ More sustainability facts of Garden House
The house was designed with passive solar features built in. Most windows face North and have fixed awnings. The large North facing double height windows have external venetian blinds. This all works well with lots of passive heating in winter and the sun effectively blocked out in summer.
The house is double studded with double thickness wall insulation, underfloor insulation, an insulated concrete slab and double glazed windows with thermally broken aluminium frames.
The concrete slab was specified at 50% fly-ash content cement, making it much lower in embodied emissions than standard concrete.
The brickwork is all recycled brick
Major trees in the garden were left in place and the house built to accommodate them
The house can maintain 10-15 degree heat variation to outside for reasonable periods without active heating or cooling.
The house is all-electric with no connection to the gas network. Hot water, space heating and cooling, hydronic heating, pool heating - is all supplied by highly efficient heat pumps. Cooking is done on induction cooktops and electric fan-forced ovens (and a steam oven).
The house has 17kW of solar panels, facing North, East and West - to maximise solar output throughout the day. Way more than enough electricity than the house uses during Autumn, Summer and Spring and on sunny Winter days. They often produce over 100kWh of electricity/day
The house has 2 Tesla Powerwalls - that store 26kWh of electricity. In Autumn, Summer and Spring this is usually enough to power the house through the night - and the house effectively is self-powered. In fact, most days it would be self-powered and put excess electricity back into the grid.
The garage has 3-phase EV charging and regularly charges a Tesla Model 3. On a sunny day, the solar and battery capacity can easily accommodate charging the car - so effectively it runs for free.
The house is fully automated with Dynalite and Control4. Blinds, lights, fans and HVAC can be controlled from anywhere.
The hydronic heating runs off a Nest thermostat which automatically optimises usage
The house has heat recovery ventilation which is constantly bringing in fresh, filtered air at the same temperature of the interior of the house.
Water: 15,000 litres of water tank storage, stored under slab in garage. Tank water used to irrigate garden and for toilets
Zoning: The house can be zoned off into sections so that you only need to heat or cool the section of the house being used
Teleconferencing: The office is equipped with high-quality teleconferencing equipment, which reduces the need for travel
Bicycles: The house has a bicycle entrance leading to a bicycle storage area - this removes friction from making the decision whether to travel by bike and substantially cuts down on car use
Compost: We have installed a Hungry Bin which can get through 2kg of food waste / day removing the need to put food waste into land fill
Vege patch: Irrigated vege patches that grow most of the herbs that we use plus seasonal vegetables.
