Описание к видео Matt Poll - lecture 13 July 2022 - Oceanic Art Society, held National Art School, Sydney, Australia

Shaped by the Sea

Matt Poll's lecture introduces some of the magnificent research on Australian Indigenous Maritime History that is reflected in the exhibition of the same title now open at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

'Shaped by the Sea' tells the story of Australia’s maritime history and our relationship with seas, rivers and waterways from the deep past. As an island nation Australia has a unique relationship with the sea – now told through the lens of modern science and maritime archaeology, as well as through Indigenous knowledge.

The experience transforms the way the museum has interpreted the National Maritime Collection and heralds a new chapter in the life and vision of the museum. Hundreds of objects from the collection are on display for the first time, including several significant and iconic pieces such as Alick Tipoti’s bronze sculpture Kisay Dhangal.

Matt Poll is the Manager Indigenous Programs and Curator of the Indigenous Heritage Collection at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. He was previously in curatorial roles for 20 years at the Macleay Museum in the University of Sydney, his most recent project was the stellar exhibition at the newly opened Chau Chak Wing Museum in Sydney “Gululu dhuwala djalkiri”. Matt is of South Sea and Torres Strait heritage and is particularly interested in collections development that is participatory and relational to communities desires and how they want to see themselves today and in the future.
