GAME REVIEW IN DESCRIPTION

I couldn't find a single youtube video showing a successful mission on Ace of Aces so I had the chance to finally give this game some justice. This is Ace of Aces, a World War 2 game flight game for the Sega Master System where the player take control of a British RAF Mosquito which is sent out to destroy numerous airborne and land based targets.
Before the mission take place, the player can choose which weapons the Mosquito is armed with to suit the mission. The aircraft starts in southern England and flies to targets located over a World War 2 era Europe.

The game has a well done menu system, where the player starts in the mission control room and upon selecting a mission they are taken the the aircraft's bomb bay for arming. Then a small cutscene is shown just before the game begins. It gives the player a sense they are actually in the World War 2 era.
Once in the game the player has complete control over the aircraft, and this is where I think most people decide they do not like the game as it does have more in common with a flight simulator game rather than an arcade shooter. And as most youtube reviewers seem couldn't post a video completing a single mission (for the Master System version anyway) one can only assume they did not took time to learn the controls of the game. One reviewer complained that there wasn't heat-seeking missiles in a World War 2 game despite not even being tested until after the war.
The controls do feel sluggish at times especially when trying to point the aircraft in the right direction using the compass and after reading about the de Havilland Mosquito its not in keeping with its lightweight and fast reputation.
There are a lot of dials and levels which the player can alter as well, each engine and wing can have different settings, but i'd recommend leaving these setting alone as they didn't seem to alter the plane's performance too much. I did try lowering the boost to try and save fuel, but I'm not even sure it really did anything.
Access to the bomb bay which shows how much ammo the player has left is available as well as a map which shows where in Europe they are as well as their targets.

When flying to the targets the player will encounter enemy aircraft which need to be shot down or evaded (although the latter is difficult without taking some damage). Shooting can be difficult as the target constantly veers away from your aiming reticle and because of the limited ammo the player must be conservative at the same time. Once the player has destroyed all of the targets they must turn around and fly home to England where they will receive a mission breakdown and a score.

Graphically I am impressed with the menu layout and the detail on the plane itself. All of the dials update regularly, the player can see fires on their engine if they are damaged and there is a good amount of detail on the enemies when you encounter them.
The biggest graphical flaw I see in the game is a clouds which the player sees almost all of the time. I find there look too jagged for clouds and they scroll too slowly which is a shame since the rest of the game animates smoothly.

The sound of the Mosquito's engine through the 8-bit Master System is a bit of a drone but is probably all the console could provide in those times. Elsewise the sounds are simple gun firing, missile firing and a simple explosion effect.

Tips
When flying towards the targets I found it best using the Map and then get the bottom of your red airplane icon to meet the top of the enemy icon. This should trigger the target encounter.
Always take more fuel when on the arming menu. I wasn't able to finish any missions without extra fuel.
