Before we had global positioning technologies, for centuries travellers used the stars to help navigate their way. This is known as celestial navigation. In the Southern Hemisphere the constellation 'Crux' more commonly known as the 'Southern Cross', in combination with the 'Pointers' (Alpha and Beta Centauri), can easily be used to find south. Simply imagine a perpendicular line coming from the mid-point between the pointers, then a line from the longer section of the cross. From where these lines intersect, another line straight down to the horizon is south.

'Sail By The Stars' is in the style of British marches from the early twentieth century and should be played no faster than q = 112.
Make sure the introduction is strong, but leave some dynamic space for the syncopated section and drum cadence. As you would
expect, the first strain (bar 23) is repeated. Clarinets and saxes lead at first, but every part has important moments, so strive for
good balance. The second strain features the low brass and woodwind followed by a re-orchestration of the first strain. Softer
dynamics from the mid-high instruments will allow your low end to shine. There are crescendos to consider here with the second
(bars 55-57) peaking louder than the first. Bar 59 is an opportunity to show your audience a sudden contrast to piano. Entries from
additional instruments combine with a crescendo arriving at fortissimo at bar 74 as the music modulates to Eb Major for the Trio
section. The euphonium solo is cued in the tenor sax and trumpet for flexibility. A broader more lyrical style of playing from the
soloist is desirable, likewise from the whole ensemble at the 'Majestic' section. French horn and oboe are doubled or cued in other
parts. 3rd clarinet remains below the break. I hope this piece provides a contrast to your concert program and is enjoyed by all!
