Why We Shouldn’t Stay Silent | Teodóra Márkovity | TEDxELTE

An assault is hard to talk about, especially if it’s of sexual nature. The factors of shame, self-doubt, and anger make it hard to truly see that what happened to the victim, is not their fault.

Teodora knows this, as she went through it first hand. From realisation to grief, to anger, to acceptance to finally be able to openly speak about what happened to her. And she knows she is not alone. She wants others to not be afraid or ashamed about what happened to them, but speak up; but also has a couple of words for those who don’t know what to do, when somebody tells them their story. Listening is the key to all empathy. Teodóra was assaulted sexually when she was a child. With the help of her psychologist, she is in the process of healing. She often remarks about how people, men, and women equally, tend to blame the victim. That is the reason why she speaks out against assault: she wants to help those with similar experiences to be able to talk about what happened to them, so they can start healing and shape public discourse. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
