Al-Mujtaba (The Chosen One) – A Noble Title of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)
"Al-Mujtaba" is one of the beautiful and honorable titles attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The word Mujtaba comes from the Arabic root ج-ب-ى, meaning to choose or to select with care and love. Thus, Al-Mujtaba means "The One Who is Chosen"—not just by people, but by Allah Himself.
This title reflects the spiritual excellence, divine selection, and supreme honor bestowed upon the Prophet (PBUH) by the Almighty. Just as Prophet Musa (Moses) was called Al-Kalim (the one who spoke to Allah) and Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was Al-Khalil (the friend of Allah), our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is Al-Mujtaba, the one who was chosen from all creation to be the Seal of the Prophets.

The Significance of Al-Mujtaba
1. Divine Selection:
Allah chose the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for the final and complete message of Islam. This was not by chance—it was a divine selection full of wisdom, love, and mercy.
2. Spiritual Purity:
The title Mujtaba also indicates the Prophet’s spiritual refinement and moral purity. He was selected because of his unmatched character, mercy, and truthfulness—even before Prophethood.
3. A Role Model for All Times:
As Al-Mujtaba, he is the ultimate example for humanity—the one chosen to guide people through every era, every challenge, and every heart.
4. Love of Companions and Saints:
The Companions (Sahabah) and Sufi saints deeply revered this title. In poetry and devotional literature, Mujtaba is frequently used to praise the Prophet’s gentleness, humility, and chosen status among all of creation.

Al-Mujtaba in Islamic Tradition
Though the word "Mujtaba" may not be directly mentioned in the Qur'an as a name, its meaning and essence are reflected in various verses:
“And Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him].”
(Surah Ash-Shura 42:13)
Many classical scholars and commentators of the Qur’an (like Ibn Kathir, Al-Qurtubi, and Al-Tabari) have understood this verse to refer to the special selection of the Prophets, especially Muhammad (PBUH), as Al-Mujtaba.
Conclusion
Al-Mujtaba is more than a name—it is a testimony to the Prophet’s sublime position in the eyes of Allah and His creation. It reminds us that our beloved Prophet (PBUH) was chosen with love, for love, and to bring love into the hearts of mankind. Calling him Al-Mujtaba is a way of acknowledging his status, his mission, and his everlasting impact on the world.
