Prince Albert II of Monaco joined Monaco Explorations onboard the Yersin in the archipelago of Madeira (Portugal) in September 2017. The goal of the mission in Madeira was to help local organizations finish mapping the Mediterranean monk seals habitat.
The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the most endangered mammals in the world, with the global population estimated at only 500 individuals. There are two main reasons for the vulnerability of the Mediterranean monk seal: fishermen view the species as competition for resources and the species has been affected by the degradation of its habitat due to urbanization and tourism.
