Описание к видео Barbara Roberts Collection: "Frank Roberts as a Mentor" (1993)

Governor Barbara Roberts recalls working with Oregon Senator Frank Roberts and his role as a political mentor, teacher, and advisor to herself and others. Recording dated August 4, 1993.

Frank Roberts served as an Oregon Representative from 1967-1971 and an Oregon Senator from 1975-1993. He met Barbara Hughey Sanders in 1971 when she was lobbying for a bill supporting the rights of disabled students to attend public schools, a period she discusses during this interview. Frank and Barbara became partners as well as political allies and married in 1974. Barbara was elected Oregon Representative in 1980, Secretary of State in 1984 and 1988, and Governor of Oregon in 1990. Frank resigned from the Oregon Senate in September 1993 during the last year of his six-year struggle with cancer; at the time of his resignation, he was the longest-serving member of the Oregon legislature. He passed away on October 31, 1993.
