🤔 What is Membranous Nephropathy?

Membranous nephropathy (MN) also called Membranous glomerulopathy is an autoimmune kidney disease (glomerular diseases) that affects the glomeruli, the tiny filters in your kidneys. These filters remove waste and excess fluid from your blood, and send clean blood back into circulation.

In Membranous nephropathy, immune system antibodies mistakenly attack a protein called phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) located on the glomerular basement membrane. This attack leads to the formation of immune complexes, which thicken the basement membrane and damage the glomeruli. As a result, the glomeruli become less effective at filtering waste, and protein leaks into your urine.

✅ Type of Membranous Nephropathy

👇 There are two main types of membranous nephropathy (MN):

🔷 Idiopathic membranous nephropathy: This is the most common type, accounting for about 75-80% of cases. In this type, the cause of the immune system attack on the glomeruli is unknown.

🔷 Secondary membranous nephropathy: This type occurs due to an underlying condition or factor that triggers the immune system attack. Some of the most common autoimmune diseases causing membranous nephropathy are lupus, rheumatoid arthritis.
