Did Metallica REALLY Copy Smashing Pumpkins?

In a recent interview, Smashing Pumpkins' frontman Billy Corgan noted the similarity between Metallica's "Fuel" and his band's earlier track "Tales of a Scorched Earth," suggesting that "Fuel" sounds "awfully close" to the 1995 Smashing Pumpkins song. However, Corgan dismissed any notion of intentional copying, acknowledging that artists often influence each other and admitting he's "ripped off Metallica plenty."
