FANUC America Authorized System Integrator Farason Corporation developed this automated system to perform two inspection processes for insulin pumps, then load the pumps into trays with excellent speed and precision.

First, the Farason Chassis Tray Automation Machine receives insulin pump chassis from upstream equipment. A FANUC robot is used to place 16 parts at a time are into a horizontal scanner nest. The nest slides from right to left for inspection by a pair of laser line scanners to look for any defects. A vertical scanner tool picks the parts out of the nest, rotates, and then slides up for further inspection by another pair of laser line scanners. After inspection, the vertical scanner tool lowers and rotates so the parts are face up. A FANUC M-10iA/12 Robot picks half of the parts at once, then rotates 180 degrees to pick up the other remaining half. The FANUC robot drops parts that failed the earlier inspection process either into a reject bin or a quality control bin. After parts are dropped, the FANUC robot moves to replace those parts by picking from a buffer and then placing all 16 parts into a tray. This buffer ensures that all 16 pockets in the tray are filled with a good part. When the tray is full, the tray is removed and placed on an outfeed conveyor.

This system from Farason receives 56 parts per minute from the upstream equipment - Between the horizontal and vertical scanners, the system performs 320 separate inspections per machine cycle.
