The Steindamm was in 1539 the first paved road, which was created outside the Hamburg city walls. He joined the stone gate of the Hamburg ramparts with the Lübeck Gate in the fortification of the suburb of St. George. As part of the connection between the cities of Hamburg and Lübeck (later federal highway 75), it was the busiest street in the city. ---------------
