After decades of low growth, the power grid is now grappling with load growth from data centers. Grid operators and utilities are tasked with planning for this new growth despite increasing uncertainty around how, when and where it will manifest, while operating under the premise that data center operations are rigid and inflexible.

A new study by Telos Energy and GridLab turns this assumption on its head by diving into the benefits of incorporating large load flexibility early on in the resource planning process. Taking NV Energy as a case study, we apply a flexibility framework that addresses certain limitations contributing to load uncertainty in current utility processes, and assess its impact on the utility’s operations.
