Former India women’s team captain and renowned broadcaster, Anjum Chopra, opened up about her cricket journey, the challenges of her early playing days, and India’s long wait for an ICC World Cup in women’s cricket during an exclusive Interview with Crictoday and Grehlakshmi.
Reflecting on her formative years, she recalled how limited resources never came in the way of her determination.
“Resources were not as they are today, but they were also not less. It was sufficient. If one wants to get somewhere or do something, eventually they do,” she said.
Coming from a cricket-loving family, her passion for the game began early.
“In my family, everyone talked of cricket. My uncle played at India A level. We had lots of talks about the game. I saw the 1983 World Cup, saw pictures of Kapil Dev and his team lifting the trophy. I also wanted to lift a trophy,” she added.
Why India Still Waits for a Trophy
India’s women’s team has come agonisingly close to ICC glory — reaching the finals in 2005 and 2017, and several semi-finals since — but the ultimate prize still eludes them. When asked why, the former skipper pointed towards the fine margins that decide big matches.
“Skills… and where skills fall short, mental strength comes into play. Every team, every individual has to develop it. In tough situations, these matter the most. Semi-finals, finals… these are all numbers,” she explained.
Looking Ahead to the 2025 World Cup
With the upcoming Women’s World Cup set to be hosted in India, expectations are running high. Fans are eager to see if Harmanpreet Kaur’s side can finally script history on home soil. On being asked if India could lift the trophy this time, she chose her words carefully.
“World Cup aaega he, squad announce hogi he… matches honge he… final mein pata chalega kaun jeetega. Hopefully, Harmanpreet Kaur-led Team India will lift the trophy,” she said with optimism.
As the countdown to the World Cup begins, her words serve as both a reminder of the mental resilience needed at the highest stage and a hopeful glance towards a brighter future for Indian women’s cricket.
