It’s said that the legend of the Devil Baby of Hull House inspired the book “Rosemary’s Baby,” that later became a movie directed by Roman Polanski. The legend has variations, but one account tells of a disappointed father who really wanted a boy.

He said that he’d rather have the devil in the house then another daughter to disturb his rest! His wish came true. Because of that, the couple was punished with the birth of the devil baby and the father took it to Hull-House for Jane Addams to take in.

For six weeks in the summer of 1913, visitors came to Hull-House convinced that Jane had taken in the Devil Baby and locked it away in the attic.

The movie is based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Ira Levin. He came up with the idea in 1965. His pregnant wife, their New York apartment and the anxiety of being a parent also inspired the book.

Roman Polanski’s psychological horror film, Rosemary’s Baby is about a struggling actor named Guy Woodhouse and his wife Rosemary, played by Mia Farrow.
