The story centers on a character named Corven, who was born into a species known as the Kailu. This race, native to a territory called Tawalisi, possesses the ability to shapeshift and is feared by humans as monsters who hunt them for their flesh. While some Kailu factions hunt the living, many, like Corven's family, were survivors who discreetly fed on the dead to keep the peace.

When Corven was fifteen, a group of human heroes attacked his camp, slaughtering his people. During his escape, Corven was wounded by a hero, but managed to flee into the forest. The hero who pursued him, Itrion Varne, had a change of heart upon finding the terrified child. Instead of killing him, Itrion hid Corven, took him into his home, and raised him as his own. To help Corven control his hunger for human flesh, Itrion raised pigs for him to eat.

Over time, Corven came to see Itrion as a father figure. Itrion, in turn, questioned his own beliefs about the Kailu and gave up his life as a hunter to raise the boy in peace. As an adult, Corven joined the very ranks of the heroes who had once hunted his people, hiding his true nature from his comrades. He did this to continue Itrion's legacy of compassion, hoping to one day help someone else the way Itrion had helped him.

A pivotal moment occurs later in Corven's life after he has joined the human settlement's military. While he is away on duty, a rogue Kailu faction attacks the settlement, and Itrion is killed protecting the villagers. Corven is devastated by the loss of his adoptive father and crushed by the guilt of not being there to save him, especially since the killer was one of his own kind. The final artwork for the project captures Corven in this moment of intense grief, kneeling and holding Itrion's helmet, looking up as if searching for guidance. This event leaves him caught between two worlds, facing the risk of being rejected or killed by either side if his true identity is ever discovered.
