Phil Foden doubled the lead 12 minutes later and there would be further strikes from Riyad Mahrez and Erling Haaland after the break as the Blues secured a 4-0 victory to move back to the top of the Premier League.

HOW TO DEFEND CROSSES?

✅ Defending players should be switched on immediately when the pass is played wide.
✅ Track forward runs.
✅ Remain goal side and if possible ball side also.
✅ Attack the ball and defend the space in front of the attacker.
✅ Defending Triangle - Positioning to be able to see both mark and ball.
✅ Communication and Organisation of the GK and back line.
✅ Cover and Support (i.e. Mark your man and half of someone else's).
✅ Individual defending technique (side on, low centre of gravity, body shape).
✅ Offside Trap if attacking runs are very early.
✅ Second and Third phase balls must be cleared.
✅ Once cleared quickly push up the defending line and reorganize.
✅ If GK calls for the ball defenders should screen and protect GK from incoming attacking runs.
✅ Selection of correct clearance method (i.e. head, volley, foot, etc)
Need to head behind/or cross bar?
✅ Can we hold our line so as not to encroach on the GK and not too high to encourage balls in-between the GK and defending line.
