Around the turn of the second millennium A.D., Norse explorers explored and established a colony on the eastern coast of Canada. Tales of these adventures were eventually put to parchment, forming the foundations for texts known today as the Icelandic sagas. A thousand years later, in 1960, a Norwegian couple named Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad searched for the ruins of the legendary Viking colony on the northern tip of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. Following a tip from a local, they discovered a cluster of Norse ruins near the village of L'Anse aux Meadows- verification of the sagas written so many centuries ago.
