China has strongly objected to the teaser of an upcoming Indian film based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, released in late December 2025. Through its state-run media outlet Global Times, Beijing accused the film of distorting facts, exaggerating events, and promoting a one-sided Indian narrative.

Chinese officials and netizens on platforms such as Weibo reiterated Beijing’s long-standing position that the Galwan Valley lies on China’s side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). They claim India provoked the clash by crossing the LAC, accelerating infrastructure construction, and forcing the People’s Liberation Army to respond defensively.

China argues that the film risks fueling anti-China nationalism at a time when India-China relations have shown limited improvement following recent disengagement agreements along the border. However, the sharp reaction reveals deeper anxieties.

A high-profile Bollywood film, reportedly starring Salman Khan, has the potential to reach a massive global audience—far beyond the reach of China’s state-controlled media ecosystem. By portraying Indian soldiers as defending against aggression, the film could shape international perceptions of the Galwan incident, a sensitive issue for Beijing, which officially acknowledged only a handful of PLA casualties despite independent estimates suggesting higher losses.

This episode highlights a larger geopolitical contest: narrative control, soft power, and public diplomacy. While India allows free cultural expression and debate, China remains tightly censored, making it vulnerable to global storytelling it cannot easily counter. The controversy underscores how cinema has become a new battlefield in India-China relations—one where perception can be as powerful as military force.
