TEXT:
Do you have a good relationship with your doctor?
Does the deaf LGBT community support you?
Do you feel welcome and able to join in conversations at LGBT events ... or not?
Do you know who you can contact when you feel trapped, lost, and overwhelmed?
Do you know where to go for help when you're looking for a job that is LGBT-friendly?
Do you know who to contact for information and support when you experience abuse in relationships such as with a roommate, significant other, or spouse?
What is a community needs assessment? The purpose is to assess, identify, and determine the needs of the community. In this case, the deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deaf-blind LGBT community. It's okay for you to express your opinions, concerns, frustrations, talk about what's going well and what's not working. Then we can collect this valuable data and it will be used to help the community to improve in service provision as well as in providing opportunities for the community.
This was organized by the DC Center in collaboration with the Deaf Queer Kaleidoscope, the Deaf Abused Women's Network, a few departments within Gallaudet University, Access Interpreting, and the DC metro area Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing LGBT community.
What is involved in the project are five stages.
First, stakeholders within different organizations that may or may not have services available to the community, or may want to provide services but don't know how. These organizations get together and share ideas to gain a better understanding of the community. Second, two community forums will take place. This is an opportunity for you to come and share your personal experience, both positive and negative, and share your suggestions for how stakeholders can better serve the community. Third, when the forums are finished, a survey will be developed. Fourth, the survey will be distributed to the community for you to fill out. Fifth, the surveys will be returned to us and transformed into data which will be representative of the feedback. This data will be distributed to organizations to better understand how to serve the community.
When are these community forums? February 2nd and 16th, both on Thursdays, at Gallaudet University Student Academic Center (SAC) in MPR (multi-purpose room) from 6-9pm. The second meeting will be in the same building, in Subflex A/B.
