Composer Caio Csizmar in conversation with Neža Zupanc.

Caio Csizmar (2000) is a Brazilian composer. Born in Alfenas-Minas Gerais, he discovered a passion for music early on, starting music classes at the age of 7, and soon becoming an autodidact. He graduated in Composition at EMESP Tom Jobim in 2022 and currently studies Composition at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp).

His music deals with the exploration of rhythm and its functions as a primordial parameter, searching for new possibilities of articulation, by means of functional phraseology, reclaiming the field of melody, and instrumentalizing other parameters towards this goal.

As a composer, his music has been selected for participation in a diversity of festivals and programs. In 2023, he participated at the Atelier de Composição Lírica do Theatro São Pedro, a scholarship that foments the creation of an opera, where his opera Casa Verdi: Meta-Ópera em Ato Único was premiered.

He has worked with groups such as the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (MCME), ORTHESP, Ensemble Móbile, and Vertixe Sonora. His work “Trio” was published in the UCLA Library Contemporary Music Collection. He studied with Rodrigo Lima, Flo Menezes, Denise Garcia, and Tiago Costa, and had lessons with composers such as Yuri Kasparov, Rogério Vasconcelos, Dmitri Kourliandski, and Márcio Steuernagel.

During the pandemics, in 2020 and 2021, he developed an experimental side project for electric formations: his albums Meândria and Decriptas, the latter having been funded by the Lei Aldir Blanc grant for the arts
