Edo Castle is a Japanese castle located in Edo, Toshima-gun, Musashi Province (currently Chiyoda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). It is now the Imperial Palace.

Edo Castle and Chiyoda Castle are also known as Edo Castle, but it is said that "Edo Castle" was widely used in the Edo period.

Edo Castle is a Hirayama castle built by Dokan Ota, a vassal of the Ogiya Uesugi family, at the eastern end of the Kojimachi plateau in 1457. After Ieyasu Tokugawa entered Edo Castle in 1590, it became the residence of the Tokugawa family, and when the Edo Shogunate opened, large-scale expansion work was carried out intensively, especially during the approximately 10 years of the Keicho period, and even after that. Expansion work was carried out twice, and the total circumference of the castle was about 4 ri, making it the largest castle in Japan. For about 260 years, it became the place where the government office of the Shogunate, the 15th Shogun Tokugawa and his vassals performed their affairs. The shogun lived in Edo Castle, and there was also an Ooku where the shogun's family women lived. Several people were in charge of the shogun's assistants, the old man and the young people under him, on a monthly basis, that is, on a monthly basis, and went to work every day from the mansion around Edo Castle. In addition to middle-aged and young people, there were also people called Metsuke, magistrates, and small family members who went to work at Edo Castle. In addition, Edo Castle also needed people called guards to work as guards and guards, so the day was divided into three and worked in three shifts. When these are added together, it is estimated that about 5,000 men were resident in Edo Castle during the daytime, and it is estimated that there were about 1,000 women and girls in Ooku, so people come and go depending on the time of day. It is estimated that about 6,000 people were in Edo Castle during the day, although there may be some increase or decrease.

In March 1868 (Meiji 4) at the end of the Edo period, it is said that the total attack on Edo Castle was canceled due to a meeting between Katsu Kaishu, a vassal of the shogunate, and Takamori Saigo, a staff member of the East Conquest Army, while the new government's East Expeditionary Force was approaching. With the opening of Edo Castle, the Tokugawa family left Edo Castle, and instead, Prince Arisugawa Taruhito, the Grand Governor of the Eastern Expeditionary Force, entered the castle and set up a guardian office. When the Emperor Meiji went to Edo from Kyoto, it became the "Imperial Palace" and was renamed Tokyo Castle for a short time, after which it was used as the Imperial Palace and Miyagi. After that, the Fukiage Garden is the Imperial Palace, and the former Edo Castle Nishinomaru is the site of the palace. The area around the castle tower, Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru, which was the center of Edo Castle on the east side, is open to the Imperial Palace East Garden. The Imperial Palace Gaien on the southeast side and Kita-no-maru Park on the north side are always open, and the outside of them is open to the public.

It is designated as a national special historic site.
