Описание к видео My Father Murdered My Mother

Since the age of just five years old, Sawaira Sajid endured unimaginable violence and 'honour'-based abuse in her own home. She grew up in constant fear, forced to witness her mother being abused by her father again and again.

When Sawaira was just 14, she was sent to Pakistan to be forced into marriage. She refused to be silenced and escaped before the wedding could take place. However, the decades of abuse surrounding her did not end until the terrible day her father murdered her mother, changing her life forever.

Sawaira’s story is not only one of unimaginable trauma but also of extraordinary strength and survival. Today, she works closely with Karma Nirvana, a charity dedicated to supporting victims of 'honour'-based abuse, including forced marriage. By sharing her experiences, Sawaira is giving a voice to countless women and girls who are too often silenced.

Survivors like Sawaira have long called for all forms of 'honour'-based abuse to be taken seriously and for frontline workers to be properly trained to support victims. That's why our new statutory guidance and a legal definition of ‘honour’-based abuse will be brought in to help frontline staff understand these crimes better. Teachers, police officers, social workers and healthcare professionals will also receive more training to help them better spot the signs of ‘honour’-based abuse and know how to deal with suspected cases.

With survivors like Sawaira at the heart of our mission, we will use every tool at our disposal to accomplish our mission of halving violence against women and girls within a decade.
