Chickadee Nestling Feeding Behavior Mini Documentary

Busy times in the Carolina Chickadee nest box in the Great Smoky Mountains. These precious little songbirds are so fascinating to watch. I don't have a camera in the nest box, but I suspect there are at least 5 or 6 hungry Chickadee Chicks in there and their parents have a preference for feeding them juicy high protein green “inch worms” .
Chickadees, like almost all nesting birds - including our Screech Owls, prefer a nest box site with a perching area overlooking the box that they can use to stop when ferrying food back and forth and make sure the coast is clear before proceeding directly to the box which might attract prying eyes. Its also a great place for the male to watch over the nest box and queue for a food drop.
Fortunately for the Chickadees there is no male house wren around yet this season to make their life difficult. So I expect some Chickadee fledglings within a week or so.
