Academic writing style is a formal style, that requires: (1) use of formal vocabulary e.g. words from the Academic Word List; (2) use of formal verbs instead of two- or three-word verbs; (3) use of full form verbs, not contractions; (4) formal grammar structures; (5) statements rather than questions; (6) impersonal phrases such as 'There is'; (7) use of precise words; (8) citation of sources; (9) hedging (cautious language); (10) formal linking words.
