Doug takes on Angus ‪@gussgarage7068‬ in Angus' 1987 Peugeot 205GTI 1.9 sprint & hillclimb car.
Venue is the Liverpool Motor Club's sprint at the old Aintree GP race circuit situated at the world famous Aintree Grand National Race Course.
The car was running in Class 6a for Classic road cars first registered before 1993. The first time I sat in the car was at the start line and the track was wet for the first two practice runs. I took it very easy on the first run and improved by over 5 seconds on the second run. After lunch the track dried out and we put on 'dry' weather tyres. Angus went out first but the bonnet blew off at over 100mph! Luckily the fibreglass bonnet missed the car and landed relatively softly with minimal damage. The (4) push-pin bonnet pins were only 6mm diameter and they could not withstand the wind forces. The bonnet was refitted and copious amounts of tank tape was applied. We got 3 dry runs before the rain set in again. Overall we had 2 practice runs and 6 timed runs each. Angus's best time was 57.70 seconds with a finish line trap speed of 105mph. Doug's best time was 55.72 seconds at 106mph.
The second Doug's Shed Vs Gus's Garage challenge will be at the Barbon Hillclimb on 13th July (once more in Angus's Peugeot).
