Cape Square Entertainment (Rio Grande NJ), 4K arcade walkthrough & tour, August 2024

This new entertainment complex just opened up last summer in the Wildwood-adjacent shore town Rio Grande, just off the Garden State Parkway. Formerly a large multiplex, Cape Square Entertainment still retains 8 of the movie screens, but has significantly upgraded the remainder of the interior by transforming it into a mix of bowling alleys, golf simulators, a bar and restaurant, and of course, a gigantic arcade. Well, technically, TWO arcades, considering to get to half of it you have to cross past the entrance, ticket counter, and snack bar. The right side has a mix of mostly sports and experience themed games, including Golden Tee, NBA Game Time hoops, Comboboxer, air hockey AND bubble hockey, Cruis'n Blast, and Big Buck Hunter. In addition to this, there's World's Largest Pac-Man, Halo, and a selection of 7 different pinball machines including new Sterns as well as older classics like World Cup Soccer, Harley-Davidson, and The Flintstones. Meanwhile, on the other side of the complex near the bowling alleys, you have the rest of the arcade games, including StepManiaX for the dance game fans, the King Kong VR simulator, Space Invaders Frenzy, the new gigantic Fast & Furious game, Super Bikes 3, and even Cruis'n Exotica. There's also a small handful of more pinball machines on this side as well, including a beautiful limited edition Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles machine.

I have to say, this place is gorgeous. It's clear that a lot of hard work went into making this a very visually appealing destination for families, especially those looking for some rainy day activities when they're down at the shore. That's the good part. The bad part? The prices on the games are absolutely outrageous. $3 for a single game of Cruis'n Blast, Super Bikes, or World's Largest Pac-Man is nuts, and pricing the pinball at $2 a play (especially when a lot of these older machines used to be 50¢ per play) is absolutely taking advantage. The pain is lessened a little bit on that thanks to very generous replays, but still, a $50 game card will not last you very long here. That pricing scheme makes it very hard to recommend or come back for a second visit.
