At the beginning of "We Just Decided To", the first episode of the first season of the American television series The Newsroom, Atlantis Cable News anchor Will McAvoy finds himself at a question-and-answer session at Northwestern, one of the country's top journalism schools.

He sits among a three-person panel, fittingly in the middle, that includes two outspoken counterparts, one a liberal woman and the other a conservative man, while the session is conducted by a pushy professor.

When a female student asks each member of the panel to give one sentence to describe why America is the greatest country in the world, Will begins to imagine his former girlfriend, MacKenzie McHale, sitting near the back row holding up signs that say, "It's Not" and "But it can be".

He shouts America isn't the greatest country in the world anymore and follows it up with statistics to explain why. Then then spins a tale of how great things used to be.
