The Honda CR-V is the automotive world’s peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It’s incredibly familiar, nearly universally well-liked, and a more satisfying than you remember. It’s not the most exciting car on the road, but if you’re looking for something safe, affordable, and attractive, the Honda CR-V is a good choice.

The CR’V’s base LX trim arrives fitted with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, but the EX, EX-L, and Touring trims all receive Honda’s 1.5-liter 4-cylinder. Good for 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque, the smaller 4-pot is more satisfying and responsive, and it gets better fuel economy, too. Chris managed 27.7 miles per gallon on his test loop (without using the CR-V’s Economy mode), while the EPA expects 29 mpg combined.

All-wheel drive is optional, and it works in a way designed to help with slippery road conditions, rather than being an off-road setup. Honda also packs Honda Sensing—it’s suite of advanced safety features—into every trim, save the LX. Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking are all included in Honda Sensing.

Inside, CR-V owners will enjoy 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and nearly 76 cubes with the rear seat folded. A 7-inch touchscreen comes standard on the LX and above, and it runs both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Chris didn’t love the CR-V’s voice-command system, but he did acknowledge that this version of the car’s infotainment setup was an improvement over the 2018 model.
