In 2013, the DSM-5 replaced Asperger's Disorder, Autistic Disorder, and other pervasive developmental disorders with the umbrella diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Asperger's is now known as "Type 1 Autistic Spectrum Disorder".

In 2013, the DSM-5 replaced Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and other pervasive developmental disorders with the umbrella diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

It was overdiagnosed due to the term "High Functioning" being "attractive to mothers in the doctor's office while being informed of the diagnosis", and groups who started using the label as an identity. It became an overused social colloquialism for anybody who felt that they were different. So the term "Asperger's" was removed, and the Autistic Spectrum part was brought forth with the "Type 1" label, in order to make things less confusing and easier to categorize.

(POST SCRIPT- This is all taken directly from the mouths of those who changed the terminology. The ones who were involved directly with writing the DSM on the subject. There is a video conference I saw that I have been looking for again in order to post the link with this information, but until then, I will not be taking part in any conversations about the reasons for the re-classification, in the comments below. Any comments that claim it was due to being discovered by a german, will be deleted as that is false information. 'Asperger's' is also not a "bad word", as it is just a name, and emotions have no place in medical science. If comments continue, that are based on pointless, emotional hangups, not concerned by the medical world continue, I will just turn off the likes and comments altogether like they were for the first 6 months of release. This is not a political, or virtue signaling channel.
