Headset Preload: Expander Plug

Can you ride without headset preload? The answer is no.

Applying the correct amount of preload to the headset bearings is very important, you don’t want it to be too tight or too loose because it will affect the handlebar and headset bearings to have (a play) back and forth movements.

Today I’m going to install a headset expander, the best option I find if you are planning to install it in on a steerer tube extender or perhaps on a fork that you are planning to cut at a later time, because it’s fully removable.

The reason why I choose this over the Hope head doctor is because it’s more convenient to install and remove, the top part sits on top of the steerer tube so that it cuts the hassle of the expander from getting stuck in the steerer tube after some time.

The only concern is that you need to align it with the steerer tube, otherwise it will not go through the stem.
