The PlayStation 2 Fat was notorious for Laser failures. This PS2 could not read DVD discs, but it could read CD discs. This video shows "how to" open the PS2 and the DVD drive. "How to" clean the laser, adjust laser current, and remove and replace the laser. This PS2 was repaired by replacing the laser. The laser is KHS400B and it is available from many vendors on eBay.
Note: Sometimes the laser will have a solder bridge connecting 2 solder points. This is for protection against electrostatic damage. If your laser has that solder bridge, it must be unsoldered before installing.
