সারা বিশ্বে আলুর পরেই টমেটো সবচেয়ে বেশি উৎপাদন হয়। অধিকাংশ দেশেই টমেটো অন্যতম প্রধান সবজি। টমেটো কাঁচা, পাকা এবং রান্না করে খাওয়া হয়। প্রতি মৌসুমে বিপুল পরিমাণ টমেটো সস, কেচাপ, চাটনি, জুস, পেষ্ট, পাউডার ইত্যাদি তৈরিতে ব্যহৃত হয় এছাড়াও সালাদ, তরকারীতেও এর অনেক কদর রয়েছে। টমেটো মূলত ভিটামিন-সি এর জন্য বেশি খাওয়া। বহির বিশ্বের পাশাপাশি আমাদের দেশেও টমেটোর চাহিদা ব্যাপক। সুতরাং এই চাহিদা কে কেন্দ্র করে বাঁজারে বিভিন্ন জাতের হাইব্রিড টমেটোর জাত আসছে। এর মধ্যে টিএম ০২৮ হাইব্রিড টমেটোর জাতটি বেশ সাড়া জাগিয়েছে তার অনন্য বৈশিষ্ট্যের জন্য। কারণ এই জাতটি আকারে বড় হওয়ার পাশাপাশি পুরু এবং মাংসের পরিমাণ বেশি যার ফলে বাজার জাত করন ও পরিবহন খুব সহজ হয় এছাড়াও ভাইরাস এবং ঝিমানো রোগ সহনশীল, আকর্ষনীয় লাল রঙের হওয়াতে বাজার মুল বেশ ভালো পাওয়া যায়।
