Keeping track of ADU is important yet most beginning astrophotographers are unaware of it. Keeping a journal or record of ADU values is helpful as you will get a sense of what your values should be with your various imaging setups. Smoke from wildfires in Alberta Canada reached New England last month and was severally affecting the transparency so much so that I was unable to image. The ADU values were through the roof - more than double the normal values.
