Spark is produced between the electrode gaps of spark plug in case the voltage between the Gap becomes in range of 20000 to 30000 volts. To develop this much voltage an ignition coil is used which is actually a step up transformer capable to increase the voltage from low voltage of battery. In CDI system also called as capacitor discharge ignition system, a capacitor is charged by a power source and then discharged through the primary coil of ignition coil so that high voltage is developed in secondary coil which happens exactly on time when the spark has to be executed inside the cylinder.
