Hi, this is Lisa Michelle Umina from Halo Publishing. In this video, we're going to answer the question:

Do I need an illustrator, and if so, how do I find a good one?

The first thing you want to know about researching for an illustrator is their experience. I definitely would an illustrator that has done children's book and has experience of working with an author, working with deadlines and obviously has the talent to bring your words, your true story, to life.

The second thing is their proven track record. What kind of background do they have? Are they an award-winning illustrator? That's really helpful when introducing your book. It's that they're working with other authors that they've helped to make successful.

Third, more importantly than ever, you want to work with an illustrator that you're comfortable with. Putting together your book is really important; you're going to be giving them notes we call a storybook where you are the person giving them direction into their making of the illustration. Your notes and the communication has to be right on so that your book comes to life the way you want it to be, the way you envisioned it to look and if not, even better.

Number one, what are you looking for? Look for an illustrator that has experience.

Two, look at their proven track record.

And three, make sure when you're working with an illustrator that you're very comfortable with form the start and that they're listening to the important details to making your book come to life.
