U-PASS: University Portals, Augmented with Smart Systems

The sticker system is widely used for regulating vehicles entering certain premises, such as universities and other institutions. However, manual inspection and authentication of stickers, and logging of vehicle entry at various portals can potentially slow down traffic and cause congestion. Having a smart system can help ease this problem, and improve the overall efficiency and security. State-of-the-art models, such as YOLO for object detection, and Parseq for scene text recognition, can be used for vehicle detection and plate text recognition, respectively. Directly cascading such models, and re-training them with publicly available datasets yield poor results. While YOLO is still able to detect common vehicles, it does not have knowledge of some local transportation methods, such as jeepneys and tricycles. Moreover, license plates of public datasets do not follow the Philippines’ own standard registration plate format. To address these issues, we created a new dataset with bounding box coordinates of both vehicles and license plates. We also included their respective plate numbers in the annotation. With our data, we were able to improve the overall accuracy of our system from 10.21% to 61.91%. Presently, our system is deployed on a Jetson Orin Nano with an average FPS of 8.05.
