After what I saw as the relative failure of the Made In Abyss podcast, I was hesitant to suggest another Digi & BGE podcast series unless there was another clearly perfect idea. For most of the following year, Nate and I were both extremely busy with our own mainline content anyways, so we weren't too worried about keeping these collaborations going without any particular long-term goal in mind.
When Shield Hero came along, I thought it might finally be another perfect storm on many different levels. I knew that Nate was already a fan of the manga, and I had also enjoyed the first volume of the manga back when that was all that had existed of it, and had always wanted to continue the story. The anime adaptation seemed competent, especially after the first two-part episode, and I felt like Nate and I were going to have the rare joy of getting to praise a show that everyone loves over the whole course of its rise in popularity, which I thought was imminent.
Initially, since my main channel was taken down by copyright strikes at the time, we had to release on After Dark, and then transfer to the main channel after a couple of episodes. Moreover, at this point my channel was on an overall downturn in viewership and a podcast about a show which, while popular for a brand new show, was nowhere near the level of popularity it'd be able to achieve as it spread throught he community over the course of two seasons.
So much like in the case of Made In Abyss, we were dealing with a long haul in waiting for both the show and podcast to pick up steam in popularity, even though it was obviously going to get there eventually. But also like in that case, the show hit a quality snag--this time even more rapidly and severely, and without really recovering all the way. It also just didn't really end up being the kind of story which the early episodes had lead me to hope it was going to be. Even after sticking it out for almost half a season, I really found myself struggling to be enthusiastic about continuing to discuss the show, especially when I knew much of the audience didn't feel as negatively about it as I did, or otherwise had dismissed the show outright from the start.
Doing this show really hammered in the lesson from the previous show that making podcasts about every single episode invites burnout--not every episode has the same amount to say about it, and much of the time, nitpicking the minor flaws in a series just because you're bringing up every point you conceivably could makes the show seem worse than it probably is on the whole. Covering small bundles of episodes leaves a lot more room to think about the show in a big-picture sense while also having room to dive into noteworthy specific details.
On that note, the playlist on After Dark originally included this bonus video in which I rant at commenters over our disagreement over how the early episodes of the series are meant to be interpreted. For some reason, my original upload which included this clip got blocked for one of the parts therein, even though the video is already up on youtube. Anyways, you can watch it here: • Why Are You So Wrong About Shield Hero?
Now that we have this channel, there is a good chance that we'll do at least one more podcast to round out the rest of the first season of this show. There have already been second and third seasons announced, so if we decide to continue covering it in the end, we'll be doing that here on this channel for sure!
