Why would a consultant from the hotel industry attempt to deem vacation rentals as unsafe and not able to open for MONTHS after hotels? Hmmmm....could it be profit motive? Could it be an attempt to limit the accommodation options made available to Travelers once Visitor Travel to Hawaii resumes? Could it be that they really don't care about vacation rental businesses and the critical component that they play in Hawaii's overall visitor travel industry? Of course!

They are threatened by the idea that Travelers returning to Hawaii would be given a CHOICE about where to stay. They know that it is going to be a struggle for ALL in the accommodations sectors to recover from COVID-19 and they would much rather have 100% of the available Travelers than some lesser percentage as a result of legal Vacation Rentals being allowed to safely reopen.

Does this consultant represent all hotels in Hawaii. Not likely. It is his statement and opinion, but should bear no weight whatsoever in the minds of decision makers as he is making a highly biased statement! He is, after all, a consultant for the "hotel" industry, not for vacation rentals. Since he made the comments to the Reporter, she was objective enough to recognize it was only fair for those from the vacation rental side of things to weigh in on this point of contention as well.

To make a blanket statement like that that vacation rental owners and managers are somehow unable to deliver safe, sanitary and disinfected vacation homes to Travelers is far from the reality. The vacation rental industry and all the major players in it, are HEAVILY involved in adopting some of the most detailed and stringent cleaning protocols and disinfectant guidelines in the Global Travel Industry! End of story! Sure, this does not guarantee that 100% of vacation rentals in Hawaii are going to be perfectly cleaned every time, but what guarantees do we have from the hotel industry that 100% of every hotel room will be perfect? Such guarantees do not exist as each property and processes will vary.

Which again speaks to the importance of Travelers being able to make a choice and to be able to do their necessary research to decide which hotel or which legal Hawaii vacation rental they are going to reserve.

If our Company is using the same electrostatic sprayer equipment being used by United Airlines in their aircraft, to disinfect every vacation home between every Guest, how could one state that we are somehow less safe than a hotel room or deemed somehow inferior to the point that we should not be allowed to open at the same time? These arguments do not make sense and are not based any form of reality that we see, as boots on the ground for more than a decade in the Hawaii vacation rental industry.

The power plays, politicking and playing favorites in the midst of this devastating COVID-19 pandemic and local travel shutdown, needs to stop and the sole focus of Hawaii officials for the time being needs to be on SAFELY reopening Hawaii to visitor travel, as quickly as they possibly can.

Just because the 14-day quarantine has been extended to July 31, 2020 on Trans-Pacific travel does not mean that it SHOULD be extended that long. It should be lifted as soon as is humanly possibly so that Hawaii businesses and unemployed families can get back to work!
