It was totally appropriate that the medals for this event were presented by Hilary Rendall (formerly Donaldson), who was the only Orkney athlete to previously win the gold medal in the women’s 100 metres at the Island Games. She achieved that at the very first Games, held in the Isle of Man in 1985. Indeed Hilary and Taylah Paterson remain the only Orkney athletes, male or female, to win any colour of medal in the 100 metres.

For the first time during the athletics competition, Orkney’s anthem “The Grand Green Isles” was played, following Taylah Paterson’s hugely popular victory. It was Taylah’s first individual gold medal, coming in her fourth Games having made her debut in Jersey in 2015. She was the bronze medallist in 2017.

Katie Dinwoodie (Shetland) stood on the podium for the fifth time in an individual event, and improved her previous two bronzes in the 100 metres to silver this time.

The bronze medallist was Abi Galpin (Guernsey), the fourth individual medal of her career that included the silver in the 100 metres in 2023.
