The Rocket Bar (Space Quest Bonus Video)

Wow! Today, 30 years ago, the remake of Space Quest: The Sarien Encounter was released!

There are some things I love about the game, and some that I don't like so much. Let's begin with the bad so I can end it with something nice. Even though it has its flaws, it deserves some celebration.

In the middle of remaking some other Sierra classics, the decision was made to remake Space Quest I aswell. But it was made by a completely different team, without any involvement of the Two Guys From Andromeda. Scott Murphy didn't learn of its existence until it was finished and still had his name on it. And I think Mark Crowe had moved to Oregon and Dynamix at that point. The main disappointment was the retro sci-fi style. The original, as old the graphics were, still had a futuristic style.

On to the good stuff. Even though I agree that the retro sci-fi style didn't fit, they made a beautiful game. They made the puzzles more manageable. Items you easily could miss in the original got easier to find now. And best of it all, the beatiful soundtrack made by Ken Allen. The original bleepy Tandy three-voice theme got more epic. Some of my favorite themes from the entire series is in this game.

So I'm celebrating with some music, the songs from the Rocket Bar to be precise. The original Oasis Bar also had some nice tunes, but they got a whole lot better for the remake. So, enjoy the Blues Siblings, the Mad Donna and the tiny rockers. If you look closely, you might spot tiny huge beards too. I'll return with a new bonus videos when I can get a better shot of those beards.

Take out your old box of Space Quest I: Roger Wilco in the Sarien Encounter, give it a hug and play it today some for old times sake. Many thanks for watching the video! I'll be back soon with more Space Quest!
