Punggol is located in the northeast region of Singapore. Punggol is very dear to me because when I arrived in Singapore for the first time in 2007, I was offered a residence in this area. As soon as I saw the beautiful grass, kids flying kites and the sea water from the balcony of my apartment, I said yes. I could see into another country from my window which is Malaysia. Punggol was a less crowded place but with scenic views, most of all there was an excellent food court below the apartment building. The chile crab and the fried chicken were my most favorite dishes from the food court.

Now a days Punggol has become very famous because of its Instagram-worthy landscape, spots and natural beauty. The area has also turned out to become a great residential area with amenities and a superb mall. The new waterfront housing system is also a major attraction of the area. One of the most praised things in Punggol is the view of Sunrise and Sunset when the sky becomes a magical canvas of colors. Punggol is also very near to Malaysia. You can stand on the seashore and what you see on the other side, is in-fact Malaysia.

Over the time Punggol has gone through many improvements. The transportation network has been strengthened and the beauty of waterfront housing schemes have attracted a lot of people to come and live here. The people who share the pictures of sunsets from their homes, attract many more to visit the place. The development of the area was announced in 1998 but due to financial limitations the development actually started in 2007. Maybe they knew I was coming to live here. Unfortunately, I had moved to Fernvale area before the major developed was accomplished.

History of Punggol

It is said that Punggol has bene there for more than 200 years. Initially, it was mainly a rural area with farmhouses. The residents were mostly Malays. The early Chinese immigrants settled in Punggol from the mid-19th century onwards. They were mostly engaged in rubber plantation works. Some of the Chinese villagers started poultry, fish and pig farming. Though pig farming was discarded, and poultry also got reduced, fish farming continued and revolutionized into hydroponic and non-pollutive vegetable farming.

Most of these farms and land was demolished to create new residential housing projects for the people. Because of the fish farming activities, Punggol was and still is famous for seafood restaurants. Punggol is also a famous historical place in relation with World War II, when around 400 Chinese civilians were massacred in 1942 by Japanese military at Punggol Point. This site has been declared as a national heritage side and a war memorial is placed in this area.

Punggol Beach

I discovered Punggol Beach one day by chance without even knowing about it. During my early settlement days in Singapore in 2007, on a Saturday evening, I was feeling a bit low and lonely. I decided to explore through the area on bike. I took out of my apartment building moving wherever my thoughts led me. I saw a small but beautiful road going inside towards woods. Singapore being a very safe area, I followed the road and I reached this amazingly wonderful place called Punggol Beach. It was then I found out on a small board that this place has a historical importance.

It was very quiet, and nobody was there except me. I took my time and sat there for a long time watching big ships passing through the sea in-front of me. A ship passes by every now and then giving a boost to the water waves at the seashore. I immediately fell in love with the place and it became my favorite get-away spot from the Hussle-bustle of the world. I brought many of my friends here, who also loved this place. Eventually, the place started to get a lot of visitors by the passage of time.

This place is a war memorial, a site where 400 Chinese civilians were massacred by the Japanese military during World War II. It is said that human remains are still being found today. The place is declared as a National Heritage Site of Singapore.
