Division of Labor - The extent to which economic tasks (jobs, work, etc.) are specialized or different one from another. The division of labor increases as populations and technological development grow. The division of labor affects not only work and production, but, according to Emile Durkheim, also has moral and social consequences. While all societies have some division of labor (especially between men and women), industrialization dramatically increases the division of labor. Today the division of labor is global in scale.
