The Overlook Hotel is opening its doors once again. More than 40 years after The Shining haunted audiences and cemented its place as one of the greatest horror films of all time, The Shining 2 is officially in the works, with Jack Nicholson set to reprise his iconic role as Jack Torrance. The new film, a direct sequel to the original, will also star Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrance, returning as an older and wiser version of the character who barely escaped the horrors of the Overlook as a child.

Directed by Mike Flanagan, known for his work on Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House, The Shining 2 promises to be a terrifying, psychological exploration of trauma, family, and the lasting effects of evil. With Stephen King himself involved as a consultant, the film aims to strike a balance between Stanley Kubrick’s classic film and King’s original novel, incorporating elements from both sources while carving out its own chilling identity.

While much of the plot remains shrouded in secrecy, early reports suggest that The Shining 2 will follow Danny Torrance, now in his 50s, as he is drawn back to the Overlook Hotel to confront the lingering supernatural forces that have plagued him since childhood. Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of Danny will pick up where Doctor Sleep left off, though The Shining 2 will act as a standalone sequel, diving deeper into the twisted history of the Overlook.
