I purchased a Wheeliams rear wheel carrier for my VW Crafter 2020 model. With the recommendations on forums and YouTube, and looking at the manufacturer web site I thought it was a great design.
Rather than using the sheet metal as a structural load point by utilizing the hinge strength had appeal. I felt it would be more fatigue resistant against the dynamic weighted loads of the wheel.
Poor quality assurance and lack of attention to the attachment detail has made me think it wasn't such a good idea.
You will need be a competent welder/fitter to address the issues. There is an 18mm hole in the hinge, with only M10 x 25 bolts and washer provided. The gap is too sloppy. The hinge underside has tapered walls which prevent a clean seating of the washer.
In some forums they suggest stainless steel countersunk bolts to solve the issue. Be wary that there is a galvanic potential difference against galvanized finished steel. You could have rust issue later.
The countersunk bolt solution is poor as there is still a lot of slop. I think I will need 18 × 4.8mm spacers and bolts with a ground down 2mm washer.
I was provided with a flat pack and had to weld the wheel frame up. There were no instructions provided. The lugs used to locate the flange were incompatible with the A frame and had to be ground back.
After applying a galvanized coat and painting it, I discovered that the vertical bar was not flush with the horizontal. So now there will be more expense to cut, re weld and paint.
Unfortunately there are not many alternatives that I like. So battered and dismayed I will persist.
