Mastering Leaf Area Index | LAI, Horticultural Studies and Agriculture Research

Описание к видео Mastering Leaf Area Index | LAI, Horticultural Studies and Agriculture Research

Today we discuss mastering leaf area index, LAI, horticultural studies and agriculture research. In this video by M.S. Karla Garcia, Hort Americas Technical Service, we learn about leaf area index, also called LAI.

LAI is a key variable that can be measured in horticultural studies involving relation between crop growth and yield, meaning that if you want to evaluate how your crop is behaving, and how this affects your yield, LAI is something you want to know. But what exactly is LAI? LAI represents the structural attribute of the leaf component, estimated by area of leaf per unit of ground surface area. This variable can represent the space available for photo interception, which will obviously affect your yield. LAI can be an indicator of canopy health and development, and this variable can also be a very useful tool when looking to evaluate the performance of your crop.

LAI is one of the most important surface state variables required for a better understanding of many plant processes: Crop growth, Gas exchange, Energy and Water balance, etc. LAI can even be used to study how pests and diseases affect and spread in a crop.

Why should you measure LAI in a greenhouse?
can provide information about your crop needs
can provide information to evaluate new methods or new management to improve production
can tell you about microclimate and system management necessities
can provide information about plant transpiration, water use and humidity
can be directly related to yield

The LAI and crop yield have a strong link. The quantity of leaves (and LAI) will affect yield because leaves are required for photosynthesis and create the majority of biomass. Furthermore, because of its importance in predicting the effect of environmental conditions on plants, most crop simulation models will employ LAI to forecast yield.

The relationship between LAI leaves and yield is not straightforward, as it varies depending on the type of crop and the period of a plant's life cycle. As a result, LAI could be tested at various stages of the plant cycle to determine the best yield. LAI comparisons between years are a useful way to assess how well the crops are doing.
