Pica, an eating disorder characterized by craving and eating of non-nutritional items like clay and ice, has been linked to iron deficiency and has adverse health implications. It is prevalent among pregnant women and children and caused by many factors but the role of genes is yet to be established.

The aim of this study was to determine the possible relationship between haematological and genetic markers associated with iron metabolism in the incidence of this disorder among pregnant women in Kumasi, Ghana.
