The Russian language’s story is astonishing through every stage of its journey.
It has preserved its sounds and expressions for centuries - just as ice preserves purity.
In our past episodes, we’ve often spoken about languages bound to ancient, pre-Christian eras.
Yet Russian - this powerful, thriving language of today - had no writing system until the 9th century AD.
Much respect and admiration for its endurance through all that time, waiting until writing itself matured;
for if anything, it shows that its spirit is strong, and ever-living.

In the 9th century, Cyril and his brother Methodius created the Glagolitic alphabet.
After their passing, their Bulgarian disciples refined and simplified it - and in honor of Cyril, named it the Cyrillic alphabet.

By the 18th century, Peter the Great gave the Cyrillic script its final modern form, adapting it to the age of printing and modernization.

Then, in the 19th century, Tolstoy and other great writers shaped the Golden Age of Russian literature - their words and ideas became part of how Russians think and speak to this day.

Over time, the Russian language branched into three main dialects, and we’ve enjoyed exploring some fascinating examples of their differences.
